SPECULATIVE ECOLOGY
No. 8

This work proposes a future that is equal parts apocalyptic and utopian. In the imagined reality the developed human world as we know it has been reclaimed by plants and animals to be an overgrown, wild, untamed and dangerous fantasy world.
In some of these futures, humans have returned to a harmonious and survival based mode of living that draws on sustainable practices of early mankind. These are matriarchies where women hunt, fish, and gather with careful respect for the landscape around them.
This is a world where nature’s dominance is on display and humans are suddenly made aware of their fragile place. Humans appear surrounded by flora and fauna that is both intoxicatingly beautiful and terribly dangerous. It is a place that is equal parts paradise and hell, where nature reigns supreme.
